Quick answer
On a map they look almost the same: one long barrier island in Cape May County, about five miles of free beach, Atlantic on one side, bay on the other. On the ground, they feel like different vacations. Wildwood Crest, Wildwood, and North Wildwood all share the Wildwoods name, but each town runs on its own tempo. Here's how the Crest and Wildwood differ, so you can book the right one.
The 30-second version
- Wildwood Crest: south end. Residential. Wide beaches. Quieter streets. No boardwalk of its own, but the Wildwoods boardwalk starts at its north border. Family-oriented. Best for couples, young families, groups that want to decompress.
- Wildwood: middle. Boardwalk central. Morey's Piers, arcades, water parks, nightlife. Smaller units, lots of motels. Best for teens, 20-somethings, families whose kids want the amusement-park experience.
Beaches
Both towns have the famously wide Wildwoods beaches. The real difference is crowds and vibe.
Wildwood Crest beachestend to be quieter, even at peak. Lifeguards are on duty in summer, it's family-friendly, and most importantly the beaches are completely free. No badges, no fees, no out-of-towner premium. All of the Wildwoods beaches are free, which is rare in New Jersey (Cape May, Avalon, and Stone Harbor charge about $8 to $10 a day in 2026).
Wildwood beachesare the same wide sand but busier, especially the stretch near Morey's Piers and the boardwalk steps. Great if you want food, bathrooms, and arcade distractions a short walk away. Less great if you want quiet.
The boardwalk question
The Wildwoods boardwalk runs from Cresse Avenue, on the Wildwood/Wildwood Crest border, north through Wildwood and into North Wildwood. It's about two miles of classic Jersey Shore boardwalk: rides, games, pizza by the slice, fudge, tram cars, and Morey's three amusement piers. If "boardwalk nights" are why you're coming, you want to stay in Wildwood or at the north end of Wildwood Crest.
Wildwood Crest has no boardwalk of its own, but since the boardwalk starts right at its border, the north end of the Crest is a short walk away. (The Four Winds building on E Denver Avenue is less than a tenth of a mile from it.) From the south end of the Crest it's a short drive or bike ride. For most families that's the sweet spot: boardwalk at night, then home to a quiet block.
Looking for a Wildwood Crest rental?
What you're renting
Wildwood Crest
Mix of single-family homes, duplexes, and condo buildings, many along Ocean Avenue. Peak-season weekly rates vary a lot by size, condition, and distance to the beach. As a rough estimate, a 1-2 bedroom condo runs about $2,300-$3,600 for a July week, and larger homes cost more.
Wildwood
Dense motels and smaller units. Lots of mid-century motel-condos (a Wildwood specialty: 1950s/60s doo-wop architecture refurbished into rentals). Smaller footprint is typical, studio to 2 bedroom. As a rough estimate, weekly rates run about $1,200-$3,000. If you're on a tight budget or traveling in a small group, Wildwood usually costs less.
Who each town fits
Pick Wildwood Crest if
- You have young kids (under 10) and want calmer beaches
- You want more space for a family or multi-family trip
- You care about quiet streets and sleeping without boardwalk noise
- You still want boardwalk access, just on your terms
- You want the Shore vacation your parents brought you on, not the one your college friends did
Pick Wildwood if
- Your kids are old enough to want Morey's and the arcades
- You want to be in the middle of the boardwalk every night
- You're on a budget and need a cheaper rental
- You're traveling with teens or 20-somethings
- You love classic Jersey Shore kitsch: doo-wop motels, neon signs, pizza-by-the-slice energy
What about North Wildwood?
Third option worth mentioning. North Wildwood is the other end of the island, more residential like the Crest, with the north end of the boardwalk close by. Hereford Inlet Lighthouse is up there. A reasonable middle-ground pick between the Crest's calm and Wildwood's energy.
Driving + parking
Both towns are reached from the Garden State Parkway via Exit 4 and Route 47. Parking in Wildwood Crest is usually easier, and many rentals come with off-street parking. Parking in Wildwood near the boardwalk can be a headache, and most spots near the boards are metered or in paid lots.
