Wildwood Crest Beach Guide: Everything You Need to Know (It's FREE)

October 1, 2026· 6 min read

Quick answer

Wildwood Crest beaches are completely free. No badges, no out-of-towner fees, no weekend surcharges. They're also wide, and lifeguarded from 10am to 5:30pm in summer. The Wildwoods boardwalk starts at Cresse Avenue on the Crest's north border, so the north end of the Crest is a short walk from it.

Here's a practical guide to a day on the Wildwood Crest beach: parking, lifeguards, rules, when to go, and what to bring.

They're free. All five miles.

The three Wildwoods (Wildwood Crest, Wildwood, and North Wildwood) share about five miles of free beaches. That's rare at the Jersey Shore: only a few other spots, like Atlantic City and Strathmere, are free. No daily badges, no weekly passes, no season badge. Walk on, lay down, swim.

This adds up. In Cape May, for example, daily beach tags are $10 for everyone 12 and older in 2026, so two adults pay $20 a day, or about $80 over four days. In Wildwood Crest that money goes toward hoagies, ice cream, and whatever else.

Where to park

Parking in Wildwood Crest is generally easier than near the boardwalk. Streets a few blocks back from Ocean Avenue tend to have more open spots, and the blocks closest to the beach fill up first on peak summer weekends. Always check posted signs.

Many Wildwood Crest rentals come with off-street parking. Biking or walking down with a cooler is the move once you've done it once.

Bathrooms + outdoor showers

Public restrooms aren't at every beach entrance, so it helps to ask your host where the nearest one is before you head out.

Many Wildwood Crest rentals have an outdoor shower. Rinse off there instead of trekking sand into the rental.

Lifeguards + swim conditions

Wildwood Crest lifeguards work 10am to 5:30pm, weather permitting. In 2026 they covered weekends starting Memorial Day weekend, then every day from mid-June through Labor Day, with a smaller number of beaches guarded into mid-September. Schedules can change each year, so check with the Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol (609-522-3825).

Always swim at a guarded beach, watch for posted flags, and ask the lifeguard about rip currents if you're unsure. Conditions change from day to day.

Spots worth knowing by name

North end (near Cresse Avenue)

Cresse Avenue is the border between Wildwood and Wildwood Crest, and it's where the Wildwoods boardwalk begins. Stay up here if you want quiet Crest blocks with the boardwalk a short walk away.

Crest Pier (Heather Road)

The pier at Heather Road is a nice spot for walks and fishing.

Diamond Beach (just south of the Crest)

South of Wildwood Crest, in Lower Township. The sand is continuous, so you can walk into it from the south end of the Crest. It tends to feel quieter than the beaches near the boardwalk.

Frequently asked questions

Are Wildwood Crest beaches really free?+

Yes, 100% free. No daily tags, no weekly passes, no out-of-towner fees. All of the Wildwoods beaches (Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, and North Wildwood) are free. That’s unusual for New Jersey. Most nearby towns charge about $8 to $10 a day in 2026.

What time do lifeguards work in Wildwood Crest?+

From 10am to 5:30pm, weather permitting. In 2026 that was weekends from Memorial Day weekend, then daily from mid-June through Labor Day, with some beaches guarded into mid-September. Only swim when and where lifeguards are on duty.

Can you drink on Wildwood Crest beaches?+

No. Alcohol on the beach is prohibited in Wildwood Crest. Save the drinks for the rental deck.

Are dogs allowed on Wildwood Crest beaches?+

Not in summer. From May through September, dogs are not allowed on the beach. The rest of the year, leashed dogs are allowed. Wildwood also has a year-round dog beach at Glenwood Avenue.

Where should I park for the Wildwood Crest beach?+

Parking is generally easier in the Crest than near the boardwalk. Streets a few blocks back from Ocean Avenue tend to have more space, and many rentals include off-street parking. Always check posted signs.

Where’s the safest water for kids?+

Conditions change day to day, so swim at a guarded beach during lifeguard hours and ask the lifeguard about rip currents. Young kids often do best playing at the water’s edge close to the lifeguard stand.

Do Wildwood Crest beaches have bathrooms?+

There are public restrooms, but not at every beach entrance. Ask your host where the closest one is to your rental before you head out.
